What is Rosacea?

What is rosacea, you ask?

It's a skin condition that causes redness and pimples on your nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. It usually varies in severity, and is the only condition that is not related to your general health.

People sometimes call rosacea "adult acne" because it can cause outbreaks that look like acne. It can also cause burning and soreness in the eyes and eyelids.

It affects over 14 million people in the United States alone, and most people with the condition don't even know that they have it.

Rosacea can sometimes be found on the chest, neck, back and ears, and some people even get rosacea in the eyes - called ocular rosacea. Anyone can get rosacea, but individuals with fair skin who tend to flush or blush easily are believed to be at greatest risk. Women are affected almost twice as often as men, though men tend to have more severe symptoms.

What is Rosacea and What Does Rosacea Look Like?

Stage One - pictures of rosacea

At this stage the redness of the face is visible and the complexion is frequently red. As rosacea progresses, the blood vessels emerge and the redness becomes more visible.

The skin is normally tough and develops burning sensations, and may become irritated and burn especially when skin care products are applied.

Stage Two -

During the second stage the redness spreads and usually covers the majority of the surface of the skin. This is when pimples, swelling, and boils develop. This is especially noticeable on the nose, mid-forehead, and chin.

This is more common in women than men, and is sometimes confused with adult acne.

As the skin condition progress, prominent facial pores can develop.

Stage Three -

This stage of the rosacea skin condition can be very painful, but fortunately, not many people reach this stage.

If untreated, rosacea may lead to a condition called rhinophyma, in which long term inflammation causes the nose to appear enlarged, red and with thick bumps. This is due to the oil-producing glands and the tissues of the nose getting larger.

Rhinophyma is more common in men than in women, and it often takes several years to develop.

Rosacea Causes

What is Rosacea -and- What are the Common Causes of Rosacea?

The causes of rosacea are unknown, but researchers believe it's likely due to some combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Rosacea skin condition is stubborn and can last for years.

Some scientists believe that rosacea is a disorder in which blood vessels dilate too easily, resulting in flushing and redness. Other researchers believe that rosacea is caused by a microscopic mite.

Though the exact causes of rosacea skin condition remains a mystery, a number of factors can aggravate rosacea, or make it worse by increasing blood flow to the surface of your skin. Some of these factors include:

  • Heat (including hot baths)
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Sunlight
  • Winds
  • Temperature extremes
  • Hot or spicy foods and drinks
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Menopause
  • Emotional stress
  • Make-up, moisturizers, sunscreens, or other skin products used on the face that contain alcohol or other irritating ingredients.

One thing is certain - alcohol does not cause rosacea. However, the consumption of alcohol can lead to flushing of the skin and may worsen the rosacea skin condition, and people who don't consume alcohol at all still can get rosacea.

Treatments for Rosacea - Conventional

Rosacea treatment may vary depending on a person's signs and symptoms. Treatments used for rosacea include:

Conventional medicines (such as Erythromycin, Doxycycline, Azelaic acid, Metronidazole, Tetracycline, Minocycline, etc) only treat the symptoms of rosacea and provide temporary relief. They do not address the fundamental cause.

In addition, long term use of these drugs often carry uncomfortable, and possibly dangerous side effects……especially affecting the liver.

Treatments for Rosacea - Alternative Treatments

Many health care advisors believe it's best to use alternative treatments for rosacea. They believe that treating rosacea from the inside, as well as the outside, can reduce or cure it. Topical treatments used on the outside will relieve symptoms and provide temporary relief. Treatment from the inside will help detoxify and rebuild the body, and prevent the problems from coming back in the future.

In order for the skin to heal, you will need to use gentle effective treatments, not toxic medications and harsh chemicals that cause damage to the skin and the liver.
