What Causes Acne?

Pimples, Zits, Blemishes. No matter what you call them, acne can be annoying, frustrating, and distressing.

Acne is a disease that affects the skin's oil glands. The small holes in your skin(pores) connect to oil glands under the skin and make an oily substance called sebum. The pores connect to the glands by a follicle. Inside the follicles, oil carries dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. A thin hair also grows through the follicle and out to the skin, and when the follicle clogs up, a pimple grows.

It's not known what causes the increased production of sebum that leads to acne, but a number of factors including hormones, bacteria, certain medications and heredity play a role. Contrary to what some people think, acne is not caused by dirt.

Other factors that contribute to the causes of acne:

• Teenage years cause the oil glands to plug up more often due to the increase in hormones
• Hormone changes during pregnancy
• Heredity (if your parents had acne, you might get it also)
• Greasy makeup

The real explanation may be an intricate mix of many of these factors.

The good news is that effective treatments are available. Once acne is under control, prevention strategies can help keep your skin clear of breakouts.
