Acne Scar Treatment and Removal
Dermaroller for Acne Scars

Now that you've gotten rid of the acne, what about those scars that are left behind?

The effects of acne scars are both physical and emotional, and are difficult to avoid if you're one of the unfortunate individuals that's prone to scarring.

Scars are formed because of tissue loss/damage, and it's the lack of collagen in the skin which results in the scar being visible. Whenever our skin is damaged in any way, blood travels to the area carrying a mixture of our own body's natural defences. The body's immediate response is to heal and prevent further problems by way of infection from external sources. Unfortunately, although our skin does invariably manage to heal itself, it often does so with scant regard to how it looked before.

Acne Scar Treatment - Acne Scar Removal

Did you know that there are several different types of acne scars?

  • Atrophic macules - small, bluish-whichish skin colorations that are usually less visible than other types of scarring.
  • Depressed fibrotic scars - large, depressed valleys on the surface of the skin, and they are usually jagged.
  • Ice-pick scars - these are less severe versions of depressed fibrotic scars, and can develop into them with time.
  • Follicular macular atrophy - small, slightly raised lesions which are similar in appearance to whiteheads.

The good news is that there are several acne scar treatment and removal techniques.

Collagen Injections to Treat Acne Scars
Some specialist clinics use collagen injections to plump out flat 'tissue-paper' scars and pitted 'ice-pick' scars. But we have all seen bad collagen injection results in celebrities, so if you choose this process, please use with caution.

Laser Acne Scar Treatment
If the scars are extensive but not too deep, and the acne is no longer active, laser treatment is a possibility. However, it is costly in private clinics, requiring a skilled medical professional. If you are considering it, discuss it with your doctor first.

Dermabrasion or Microdermabrasion for Acne Scar Removal
Dermabrasion, which is basically 'planing down' of the skin using a high-speed wire brush, this used to be a common method of dealing with acne scars. It is no longer used very often because of the risk of infection.

Surgery
Scars which are deep and disfiguring can sometimes be cut out by a plastic surgeon.

Silicone sheets
You can buy silicone sheets from pharmacies. You may have to ask your pharmacist to order them. You apply the sheet to your skin like a face mask. It is claimed that this can help lumpy scars, but its effectiveness is questionable.

Dermaroller (Micro Needling) as an Effective Acne Scar Removal Method
Only recently this development has been made available, and it can be done in the privacy of your own home. Visit my Derma Roller FAQ page for more information.

Micro needling of the skin effectively promotes the formation of collagen in the skin and is effective on the more common types of scarring. This technique is also used for the reduction of other types of scars including stretch marks.

Research conducted in 2006 with tissue biopsies, has shown that a single micro needling session can encourage up to a 1000% increase in collagen levels in the skin, making it appear younger, healthier, more elastic and even textured. What is a Derma Roller?

The Derma Roller (also called skin rollers, microneedle rollers, and dermarollers) is a small hand-held rolling device which has micro surgical steel needles that reach the inner surface of your skin to promote skin repair from the inside out. It stimulates elastin and collagen production in the skin without causing any damage.

How Does the Derma Roller Work for Treating Acne Scars?

It performs collagen induction therapy, which means, as you roll the skin needling roller over your skin, the extremely fine needles (microneedles) penetrate into the dermis - the majority of which are simply pushing your pores open temporarily. This is perceived by the body as damage, which stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin.

The human body reacts to any injury by initiating the healing process, but usually it will only heal as far as it must to keep you healthy - which is different to healing to a cosmetic level. By persistently triggering the healing process, you encourage your body to continue healing until the job is finished.

The micro-channels created by the fine needles fully close within just a few hours after initial application. This provides just enough time for new collagen structures to form within the skin's lower layers, but short enough to ensure that you can quickly resume your normal schedule, thereby eliminating the risks and negative side effects that are commonly encountered with dermabrasion, chemical peeling, and laser resurfacing.

Are Derma Rollers Safe for acne scar treatment and removal?

The derma rolling process is temporarily opening your pores, and allowing dead skin cells and old collagen to be exfoliated, which causes new collagen growth.

Clinically conducted studies in the U.S. South Korea, and Europe have shown that genuine dermaroller therapy can increase serum absorption by as much as 1,000 times. This process is more nurturing to the skin than invasive and expensive skin treatments which makes skin needling at home safe.

I have to admit that my first question about the dermaroller was - - does it hurt? No it doesn't, the first time I used it I felt a tingling sensation, but no pain. You may want to visit the Frequently Asked Questions page, if you have other questions.

How Fast Will I See Results?

Derma roller instructions

Establish a Sterile Environment:
Please ensure that you wash your hands (and the area to be treated) thoroughly prior to using the Derma Roller. Dry with a clean towel. Using disinfectant, clean your treatment area and lay out the following items: Derma Roller, VitaPep Serum, (if used), antibacterial cream, a washcloth, a clean towel, some paper towels, a glass containing some disinfectant, a good quality face / body moisturiser (We recommend the MTS Peptide Moisturizer).

Step One: Apply appropriate amount of VitaPep Serum onto the face and neck area.

Step Two: Apply Microneedle Skin Roller in the horizontal, vertical, diagonal direction on your entire face and neck area. Rolling with minimal pressure is sufficient as using high pressure does not infiltrate more substances into the skin. It’s recommended to move the roller in one direction, from the crown to the front and/or sides. We also recommend that you use the roller at bedtime every other day until your skin becomes accustomed to the derma roller, then you can roll daily if you think it’s necessary. * You may experience redness and irritation due to microchannels formed, but those will be gone away in 1 to 2 hours.

Step Three: Reapply VitaPep Serum to face and neck area after using Microneedle Skin Roller.

Step Four: Apply appropriate amount of MTS Peptide Moisturizer onto the face and neck.

Step Five: (for daytime treatment): Apply appropriate amount of Sun Protective Cream onto the face and neck.

Step Six: (for nighttime treatment): Place one sheet of the Peptide Mask on your face and leave for 10 minutes.

Care of Your Derma Roller: When you have finished using the device, rinse the roller under hot running water. If you have used the roller with numbing cream, stand it with the head first in the half full glass of disinfectant for approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour (but no longer). If you only used the roller gently, you need only disinfect the device on a weekly basis. Shake off the excess liquid and stand on its side on a clean towel to dry. Please do not put the device away while it is still wet. You can put it away when it is completely dry. Please try to keep the case clean and store somewhere safe so that the device cannot be damaged between uses.
